MISSIONS COMMITTEE
The Christian who is pure and without fault, from God the Father’s point of view, is the one who takes care of orphans and widows.... – James 1:27

Our vision of the Missions Committee is to reach out and touch needy hearts, minds and lives in our community, state, country and world; that every member of the congregation would realize that we are all called to be servants of Christ. Jesus’ light and love will shine through us. "We’re saved to serve".

MISSION OPPORTUNITIES

Thanks to "Faith Promise" donations, money is available for scholarships to assist those wanting to serve on a mission trip.  Scholarship Applications are available in the Gathering Hall on the welcome table.  Two of our members who are now in college have utilized scholarships to go to Arizona- on an Indian Reservation and Brazil to help build a school.  Team members from the Biloxi and Honduras Missions are also receiving scholarships.  So don't let funding stop you from serving the Lord!!  We are so blessed at Wesley to be able to offer funding as a result of our annual Faith Promise Banquet.

A Disaster Committee has been formed to plan for the needs of our congregation in the event of a hurricane or other disaster event.  The committee is becoming very active and we have 9 members thus far.  The meeting notices are in the bulletin & newsletter.  Please join us.  We would love your input !!

Mission Updates

-Due to political instability, the Zimbabwe team scheduled to go in July had to cancel the trip. There is much suffering there at present and the current situation will no doubt lead to many more orphans, deaths, and general suffering. Please keep this situation in your prayers.

-Honduras June 21-28- This is an opportunity to see/participate in a well-rounded mission trip, coordinated and led by Phil Johnsey of Church Missions Network out of Tennessee who will join the Honduran missionary family of Sam Feazel to do medical work {non-medical team members necessary as well}, optometry, vet team work {in desperate need of some able bodied males on this team at present-fascinating team to see work}, possibly some construction, children's teams {soccer camp and Bible school}, pharmacy, and evangelism teams. Application forms are in the church office and need to be sent to Phil Johnsey at CMN, P.O.Box 2940, Lebanon, TN 37088. Cost is airfare plus $600. A great chance to learn how to do a mission team. Deadline is May 15.

ZOE Mission-  Photos  Thanks to the generous support of our Wesley family, both financially and prayerfully, the Zambia ZOE trip Fall 2007 was an incredible success. God's hand was apparent in so much, it's hard to summarize here but here are some of the highlights along with representative photos. Total patients seen around 2300 of which most were children either orphaned, abandoned, or otherwise affected by the poverty and illnesses of Africa.  Over 6000 prescriptions were filled by our pharmacy workers.  Medicines and supplies were shared with an HIV/AIDS clinic that treats malnourished children affected by this disease, a hospital in Mapanza, a community center in Livingstone, and 4 schools in the Mapanza district that we visited and served. We set up worming programs at schools and the church at Mapanza as well as providing those medicines to all we treated. Many of these children have lived with blood in their urine and worms in their stools as well as having episodes of vomiting worms for years which drastically affects their health.  hese programs will provide much needed relief. The Bibles our Wesley youth supplied were the hit of the trip as Bibles in Zambia are too expensive for most to buy. In gifting these, we left a potential impact far beyond our ability to understand and one that is more lasting than any other task we accomplished. Our thanks to all.

Honduras Medical Mission Trip

Returned July 1,2007. Click Here for PhotosThe team consisted of 25 people from Wilmington, 18 Wesley members!!!  What a blessing this week was for every member.  We went to serve Christ, but "we" were blessed in so many ways. We landed in the capital city of Tegucilapa where we met up with 45 other team members from 4 other states.  We stayed at the mission house over night and then traveled by "school bus" for 7 hours to our destination, San Miguelito.  This city had never been served by a mission team before. We set up medical, dental, pharmacy and eye clinics, along with activities for the kids daily and a clothing/shoe distribution area.  A small church was staffed with 2 Spanish speaking pastors who received over 700 professions of faith!!  Praise God!!  They were so greatful that we came to help them.
The totals for the week included:
Children: 745
Optical: 806
Soccer: 77 (2 professions of faith)
Dental: 345 (591 teeth pulled)
Vet: 296 animals seen (101 horses, 2 pigs, 6 sheep, 56 dogs, 5 cats, and 46 professions of faith)
Travel medical team: 435 (1411 prescriptions and 50 professions of faith)
Village medical team: 2022 (9763 prescriptions and 721 professions of faith)
Pharmacy: 11,174 prescriptions dispensed
Total Professions of faith: 819

To God be the glory....great things He has done!!!!
Please keep the Hondurans in your prayers.
Another team will be going in June 2008.  If you are interested you may contact Ted Winneberger or any team member.

Biloxi Mission Trip March 2007

When our Wesley Work Team arrived at the FUMC of Biloxi, with our mission logo “Touching the world with a passion for God and compassion for people...” on our trailer, they knew that Biloxi was about to receive a blessing.

The week of May 14th Tobin Wagner and  11 other volunteers from Wesley did a fantastic job on Peggy Gossage's new home. Her home now has 99% of the drywall installed and it has been taped and mudded.

On the last work day the work team was so intent on finishing their “to do list” that they decided to work through the dinner rather than return to the church. Teresa and Murrie Lee, from Trinity UMC in Wilmington, provided the group with “dinner on the grounds” - although some volunteers decided to climb a tree to eat. You had to be there to really appreciate seeing a very gracious senior citizen sitting high up in a stately old oak tree.

In addition to their donation of labor, the Wesley Memorial Work Team donated over $1,000.00 for the Leist home.  They returned home tired and weary, but feeling so blessed.  We thank this team for representing Wesley and showing God's love to those in need.  Watch the bulletin & website for future opportunities to glorify our God!!!

Missions of Mercy-

Delivered free dental care to  525 needy individuals.  The set up was awesome to see.  Our Gym was set up with over 30 dental chairs.  They offered teeth cleaning, fillings and extractions!!  Many of these patients would have never received care without this opportunity.  We thank Bob & Anne Plage for organizing this mission again and all those who volunteered their time & energy.  Through their efforts our church was given an opportunity to reach out to our community and to glorify God!  Hopefully it will be done again next year, so watch the bulletin, newsletter and website for more information.  What a wonderful opportunity to do mission work right here in Wilmington!!

Recently an outreach ministry was created for families of prisoners.

Chocolate chip cookies are needed for each visit to the prison. A dozen cookies are given to every prisoner whether or not they attend and each employee. Announcements will be in the newsletter and bulletin when they are needed. There are many ways for people of all ages to be involved in this ministry along with your financial support.

Missionary to Armenia -- Of course, eggs do not grow on trees, but each spring you will find the Egg Tree set up in the Gathering Hall.  It's a simple way to encourage people to make donations that will support our Missionary, Nara Melkonyan, who is from Armenia.

In March of 2004, we were honored to have Nara join us and tell us about her country and what Project Agape has been able to accomplish through the donations from the Methodist church. The Methodist Church is the only church contributing to the needs of the people in Lachin (Armenia) and to the rebuilding.

In May, 2004,  the people of Lachin  dedicated the Christian Education building that was completed in 2003. This building houses all kinds of activities for the children, along with a playground outside where they can play safely, and opportunities for learning for people of all ages. The Home for children houses 50 orphans, who would otherwise be on the streets and probably starve to death.

The children have a hunger to learn anything that they can. One school was completed 2 years ago, but they are in need of another. About half of the children from that area still are meeting in shipping crates. The conditions are awful. Nara took a mission team to visit It's simple to make a donation at the Egg Tree. Money supports the Armenian Missionthem. She said they were burning wood for heat, and the smoke was awful in the room; but the children remained. They have such a hunger to learn!!! The children who graduate are all "A" students; those who get the opportunity to go to a university do very well.  There is reason to hope that they will be able to help their country recover from the devastation of the earthquake and war, and the terror of being under Russian rule. Through all that, they have kept their faith in Jesus.

Up until last year, their doctor was doing all surgery under local anesthesia, because they did not have a general anesthesia machine. Last year one was donated to them! The hospital is very small. Many times there are 5-6 patients in one very small room with hardly room to walk around the bed. So this is another need that will have to be addressed.

Ninety - five percent of the population are Christians! They are hard workers, and Nara is an extremely dedicated servant of our Lord. She monitors all the building projects taken on by Project Agape and has come under budget in all of them!  How often do we ever see that?

Our prayer is that our congregation will respond to this need and increase our giving to this needy cause. What a wonderful opportunity to shine God’s light and show them his love!

Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard and Food Drives
“Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat…"
 Matthew 25:34-35

Volunteers to collect foodYou don’t have to look to a faraway land to find people who are hungry. They are right here in our own community. Are you looking for a way to help them?

Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard (MHC) is a food pantry  -- in a new location at North Fifth Street downtown --  which distributes nonperishable food products to needy families in the local area every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 1 -3 pm. Families, who have been pre-screened for need, are given vouchers by referring agencies (Good Shepherd House, the Department of Social Services, First Call for Help, and many others) which they can redeem for food at the Cupboard.  MHC is a non-denominational effort supported by many of the area churches.

A great haul for Mother Hubbard's CupboardFour times a year (February, May, August, and November), food drives are held at grocery stores all over town -- in addition to smaller collections efforts by groups like our own UMYF – to restock the pantry. Our church is assigned to the Food Lion located at Carolina Beach Road and Independence Boulevard where shift workers distribute fliers to shoppers that explain the types of non-perishable foods the pantry needs. As shoppers are leaving the store, they can deposit their food contributions in the basket outside the store. Volunteers deliver the foods collected during the two day drive to MHC where other volunteers unload the vehicles. (Food drives are two day events held on a Friday and Saturday from 9am to 5pm.)

Volunteers are always needed – to distribute the fliers to shoppers and to deliver the collections to the pantry -- and people can sign up for 1 hour shifts. This volunteer opportunity can be a great chance for teaching kids about compassion, sharing, and Christian love when parents bring their kids to help staff a shift or shop for groceries to donate. Want to volunteer for the next Food Drive?

Our church staffs the pantry the third Wednesday and 4th Saturday of every month.  This includes stocking the shelves and distributing the food to the needy when they come with their voucher.  Contact Leslie Key at the church office to volunteer.  You will be blessed.

New Life Prison Ministry
When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? ..."The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' Matthew 25:39-40

Chaplain Atwell Brookshire, a member of Wesley Memorial, leads this ministry. He ministers to the prisoners in the county jail and Burgaw Correctional Facility, distributes Bibles and Christian literature, and works closely with the Kairos ministry. Phoenix Employment Services -- is a non-profit ministry that was started about 2 years ago.  Our own Joe Nemec is on the Board.  Phoenix offers training to help people develop successful job hunting skills and guide them as they use those skills in the market place to find a job. The representatives of Phoenix will teach them how to write a resume that help them find the work they want to do.  Those they assist must have at least 3 months available housing, be clean and sober and desire full-time or part-time permanent work.  They assist them in getting clothing so they can dress professionally.  In the first year, Phoenix was able to find jobs for 27 people.  Last year, Phoenix helped 45 job-seekers; and this year to date have placed 25.  This organization helps people to help themselves instead of giving them money, food, etc.

Wesley Tutors -- For many years Wesley has supported a special form of ministry at Holly Tree Elementary School. We are the support group for their first grade readers who need a little extra help. During the academic year we have a weekly class, staffed entirely by Wesley volunteers (currently 23 full timers and several substitutes). Using contemporary materials, paid for by Wesley, we give one on one instruction to the students identified by the teachers. The close relationship between tutor and student creates a positive learning environment. People from a wide variety of backgrounds and careers find this ministry incredibly rewarding. By year’s end, the progress is amazing, generating a strong positive response by students, faculty and families. To learn more about this program or if you would like to offer your assistance, contact George Pidot (352 2038 or pidot@charter.net).
